Today, out of necessity due to yesterday’s camera mishap, I had to go shopping.  I was directed to the Harbor Bay shops in Tsim Sha Tsui and to the Golden Computer Plaza in Sham Shui Po.

The Harbor Bay shops are mostly name-brand, couture clothing shops.  Tag Heuer, Fendi, Versace, etc.  I could see some of my fashion friends having an absolute field day here.  It’s a plaza of size comparable to the Great Mall of Milpitas, and 3 floors.  Almost entirely clothing stores.

Obviously, I was led astray and was not going to find what I was looking for here.  I asked another concierge, and he directed me to the Golden Computer Plaza in Sham Shui Po.  A short taxi cab ride later, and THIS was more what I had in mind.  Narrow hallways, hundreds of stalls of computer and electronics equipment to sell, the size of a city block and at least 3 floors of it.  I managed to come away with my wallet not too badly damaged.  A new Samsung WB30F camera, with case, memory card, and extra battery, a wireless notebook mouse for my computer, and an itty bitty wireless travel router/access point.  It’s cute, like the size of a credit card and just thick enough for two ethernet cables.

I’m not sure I’m thrilled with my camera.  It doesn’t seem to focus well in low light situations, but I’ll play with the settings some more to see if I can get it to do my bidding.

For the evening’s entertainment, I went on a cruise of Victoria Harbor on an old Chinese Junk boat run by AquaLuna.  It took us out onto the bay shortly after sunset, and gave us a good view of the laser and lights show coordinated to music and run by the local tourism board.  It was a nice way to spend the evening, despite the hot and humid weather.  The light show was good, but not as impressive as I’d imagined.  I will admit though that Hong Kong does have a rather impressive night time skyline.

  1. I’m so sorry about your camera! It is exciting to hear about the electronics shopping. Reminds me of India. Did they have barkers trying to get you in every store you passed?

    • No barkers at the electronics plaza, but they’re pretty agressive out on the streets… “Wanna buy a watch? Wanna buy a watch! WANNA BUY A WATCH!!!”
