About this blog

This summer, I’m taking a trip around the world.  I’ve always wanted to travel, but never had the time or the money or opportunity to do so.  I find myself at a point in my life where I can, so I am.  This blog will include my thoughts, opinions and discoveries that I make during my travels.  If you find it interesting to vicariously experience new places from the perspective of a native Californian who has never been outside North America before, then please read along.

I’ll also be running a weekly feature “Foreign Fast Food Friday” where I find a fast food place that’s common in the United States, but try to find something on the menu that you wouldn’t be able to get at home.

A little about me

I’m a native Californian, having been born and raised and lived out my entire life thus far in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I’m 33, have a good job in the Silicon Valley tech industry, and am unattached.  I’ve done a little travel previously, cruises to Alaska, Mexico and the Carribean, family vacations to Washington, D.C., but never really out into the world.

About the trip

I’ve been planning the trip “in theory” since around September 2012.  In January 2013, I asked my employer for a 3 month leave of absence, and they were excellent enough to work with me to make it possible.  For parts of the trip, I used a travel agent, Helen Baldovinos of Let’s Travel in San Jose, CA.  Much of the trip was planned and booked by myself.  I’m using Airbnb exclusively for my lodgings in all the places I’m going to.  Speaking of places I’m going to, the list has changed a couple of times, but the final itinerary is:

  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Hong Kong
  • Delhi, India
  • Amman, Jordan
  • Casablanca, Morocco
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Rome, Italy
  • Florence, Italy
  • Venice, Italy
  • Paris, France
  • Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  • Berlin, Germany
  • London, England

After London, I’m taking a 15-day cruise on Royal Caribbean which lands in Boston, MA and then a ~5 hour flight to home.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading along with me on my trip!
